SHS faculty attends int’l confab on disaster nursing

vol04_no382010.jpgMaria Fatima C. Saquing, a clinical instructor of the School of Health Sciences, attended the 1st Research Conference of the World Society of Disaster Nursing (WSDN) at Kobe International Conference Center, Kobe, Japan last January 9-10, 2010.

With the theme: “Disaster Knows No Borders: Human Bonding,” the conference was hosted by the Japan Society of Disaster Nursing, chaired by Dr. Hiroko Minami, former president of the International Council of Nurses.

Aside from keynote speeches, informational and educational lectures, symposium, oral/poster sessions and other unique programs were featured as well.

During the conference, presenters and participants shared their experiences from disasters around the globe and actively exchanged their views about the expected roles of nurses.

Approximately 400 participants from 14 countries attended the conference.

Through the conference, participants are expected to pursue new knowledge and new relationships, thereby contributing to the further development of disaster nursing. With this, the participants reaffirmed their roles in times of disaster as professionals and citizens.

The World Society of Disaster Nursing (WSDN) was established on January 21, 2008, in Kobe, Japan, with the purpose of contributing to the health and welfare of people through the promotion of international academic exchanges and collaborative research of disaster nursing, and systematization of disaster nursing knowledge and practice.

The second conference of the World Society of Disaster Nursing is scheduled for 2012 at the University of Glamorgan, United Kingdom.
