BSE stude attends forum in Malaysia

Randymax Bulaquit, a student taking up Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSE), major in English, participated in the One-Asia Forum held at Swiss Garden Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, December 8-12, 2009.

Bulaquit attended the forum with three other Filipino youth: Ms. Anna Karina Jardin of the Lyceum of the Philippines University; Mr. Dino Badilla, Commissioner of the National Youth Commission; and Mr. Jeremy Bayucot, Administrative Officer of the National Youth Commission.

On the first day, the forum featured the sharing of five invited speakers. Dr. Jakarin Srimon, Executive Director, SEA-LAC Trade Center, University of Thai Chamber of Commerce Thailand presented the “New Ways for Business Network and Collaboration.” Mr. Fauzi Shafie, Management Faculty of Multimedia University, discussed “Social Marketing Using Social Media.” Ms. Hazel Hasaan Hisham, Manager of Marketing and Communications Asia Pacific F-Secure Corporation, tackled the “Emerging Trends in Social Media.”

Mr. Karsten Wenzlaff, Manager of Social Media in Germany, articulated on “Social Media in Europe: Collaboration, Cooperation and Participation.” Finally, Mr. Roshidul Hasan, International Student Association President, University Putra Malaysia, shared on “Rural Youth and Social Media: Engaging Rural Youth to Build Digital Generation.”

On the second day, comments and learning insights were elicited from the participants.

As an offshoot of the forum, the delegates organized YOUTHNITED, an association of Asian Youth who are involved in social issues, cultural exchange and language education.

With the theme “Youth and Social Media: Online Collaboration for the Future of Asia,” the forum was aimed at: 1) fostering understanding of Asia’s culture, and 2) building international connection for the future of Asia through social media.

The forum, attended by Asian youth leaders, was organized by the Asian Youth Council, in cooperation with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Malaysia, the Malaysian Youth Council, the Institute for Minds Development (INMIND), and the Committee for ASEAN Youth Cooperation (CAYC).

Sidelight

After the participants were toured in some historical landmarks in Malaysia, they participated in the “Youth Walk for Democracy.”

The gathering was in consonance with the 60th World Assembly of Youth.

Aimed at letting the youth express their freedom and advocacy on democracy, the event was sponsored by the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Malaysia, the World Youth Alliance, the World Youth Foundation, the Malaysian Youth Council and the United Nations.
