PROVING ITS METTLE AS CAGAYAN Valley’s leading basic education provider, the SPUP Grade School (SPUP-GS) conducted the first ever Regional Grade School Math and Science Congress held at Mere Madeleine Hall, Nov. 13-14, 2009.
In partnership with Phoenix Publishing House and Educators Concept and Innovations Publishing Incorporated, the two-day congress was attended by pupils and teachers from various private schools in the region.
Some pupils from SPUP-GS’s adopted school Bical Elementary School participated in the congress.
Speakers, who have gone nationally and internationally, were invited to talk on carefully selected topics during the convention.
On the first day, Mrs. Norma Guillermo, Regional Science Supervisor, graced the occasion as she discussed the directions of Science Education in the region. Immediately after her talk, Dr. Gil Nonato Santos tackled “Technology in the 21st Century: Creating Sci-Toys through Scraps.”
During the second day, Dr. Maxima Banatao, Regional Math Supervisor, gave the directions of Mathematics Education in the region. On the same day, Mr. Roberto Degolacion talked about Problem Solving Strategies in Mathematics.
Aside from the plenary sessions, the participants also had the chance to visit the Cagayan Valley Science Centrum which is housed in the University.
Quiz bee, essay writing contest, and poster making contest were also among the other activities during the congress.
“It took us in the Math and Science departments every pail of painstaking effort, every ounce of thorough sacrifice, and every chance of great brainstorming to come up with this very significant and meaningful regional endeavor,” Mrs. Thelma Ursulum, Mathematics Team Leader, said during an interview.
“Of course, I could not also discount the efforts of Sr. Edna whose constant support and advice led to the realization of the congress,” Ursulum ended.
