videoconfabWBThe organization KAYA NATIN!, in partnership with the World Bank – Knowledge for Development Center and St. Paul University Philippines, conducted a videoconference on good governance on September 22, 2009.

The resource speakers Cong. Teofisto Guingona III of Bukidnon and Mayor Sonia Lorenzo of San Isidro, Nueva Ecija were based at the KDC Ortigas Center, Pasig City.

The speakers addressed the 104 participants, which composed of the student-leaders and BSPALM (Bachelor of Public Administration and Legal Management students) students of St. Paul University Philippines, Tuguegarao City.

During the conference, Congressman Guingona pointed out that there is a need for our government to be more transparent. He stressed that the government should allocate and utilize the national budget more cautiously.

Mayor Lorenzo discussed the roles of the youth in fighting graft and corruption. She also mentioned that San Isidro, Nueva Ecija was elevated from a 4th class to a 2nd class municipality when the youth were empowered.

After the forum, an offline discussion - which was facilitated by Mr. Mark Dominador Ventura, SPUP instructor – transpired. The participants talked about how the youth can practice good governance in their own self, their family, their school and their work, especially if they were given the chance to be in public office.

The project aimed at: (a) raising the consciousness of the youth about the champions and models of good governance; (b) reminding them that despite the countries plight, this country still has public officials who are champions of good governance; (c) encouraging hope that individuals especially the youth can make a difference in many ways; (d) helping them to take a break from all the graft and corruption stories, and to breathe in a new perspective and inspiration; and, (e) allowing them to reflect and create their perspective on being in public office.
