Blessing in Adversity
Date posted: 11.28.2008
The continuous downpour from November 18-23, 2008 caused most areas of Tuguegarao City to be under water for days. St. Paul University Philippines was in fact one among the flooded areas. The campus grounds were filled with water up to knee level which led to the suspension of classes.
The major problem of the maintenance personnel was on how to drain the water on campus. But on the night of November 24, 2008, the City fire department was alarmed with the information forwarded to their office that a portion of the public market is on fire. Not knowing where to get enough water supply because the water source is not accessible, the firemen thought of coming over to St. Paul University Philippines and connected their fire truck host to the knee-level water on campus. Such adversity in the University served as a blessing instead! In fact, two situations were solved at a time, the campus water was drained to a much lower level and the fire was curbed immediately to prevent further damage.

St. Paul University Philippines was cited as the first private school that responded to the call of the City Government of Tuguegarao to help in the relief operations conducted for the flood victims in the area.
On Saturday, November, 22, 2008, 72 volunteers composed of administrators, faculty, personnel and students gathered at the People’s Gymnasium together with the City Officials and members of the City Disaster Coordinating Council to pack relief goods and distribute these to the victims. The SPUP team was led by Sister Jocelyn Casio, SPC and Mr. Jeremy Morales.
Soaked in deep waters caused by torrential rains for five days, the residents in the outskirts of Tuguegarao City badly needed food and other amenities. Some of the victims were isolated; hence, the volunteers braved strong rains to reach out to them. Such calamity tested the Paulinians’ commitment to their social responsibility towards their brothers and sisters in the community.
The barangays reached out to were Namabbalan, Gosi, Tagga, Linao, Annafunan, Atulayan, Bagumbayan, Carig, Bagay, Buntun and Pallua.

On November 24, 2008, the student volunteers started to help clean the University grounds which was also flooded due to the continuous rain for five days. While waiting for the relief goods which were to be distributed in the nearby towns of Tuguegarao City, the student leaders took the imitative to extend their assistance to the maintenance and personnel in the upkeep of the different areas on campus.
The commitment of the student volunteers to help both in and off- campus is commendable. They have selflessly extended their services despite the cancellation of classes.
Kudos to all the student volunteers!
