Dios ta Umma Nikamu ngamin. Good morning to you all!

Today, we celebrate the first institutional Holy Mass for the school year 2008-2009. Traditionally, we call it the Holy Spirit Mass. We believe that all our school activities, both academic and other endeavors related to growing and developing as a person, begin and end in God. So it is fitting that we dedicate this first Holy Mass to the Holy Spirit who gives us wisdom and knowledge, and who empowers us to persevere in our good works. We shall beg God to send us the gifts of the Holy Spirit that will enable us to tackle the challenges in this academic year.

Tomorrow happens to be the death anniversary of Father Louis Chauvet, the founder of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres. Let us keep in mind the charism of this simple parish priest, who, out of poverty, gathered young women to help the poor and the ignorant in his parish around 312 years ago. Today his charism continues to live. Where? Not in the monuments, not in the books but in each one's heart. As Paulinians we carry with us the mark of the charism of charity of Father Chauvet.

In this celebration, we shall pray for the Supreme Board of Students (SBS) and St. Paul University Employees Association (SPUEA) Officers who will be inducted into their respective offices and duties. We shall also remember in a special way our Social Work graduates who will take the board exams few days from now.

We are so blessed to have the Archbishop of Tuguegarao, His Excellency, Most Reverend Diosdado Talamayan, presiding in this Mass. With him are Father Fredel Agatep, the Catechetical Director of the Archdiocese and our chaplains, Monsignor Benjamin Lasam Parish Priest of Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral and Father Andy Gumangan, assistant parish priest.

Mabbalo. Thank you.

Paulinian Achiever: DBM Scholar Rises in the Land of the Rising Sun
Date Posted: 04.01.2008

Filipinos are continually making a mark worldwide.

One such a Filipino, and pride of DBM, is Jose C. Pamittan from Tuguegarao City, Cagayan who raised the Philippine flag high with his achievements as a Japanese Grant Aid for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS) Project Scholar (July 2005 - September 2007). The 33-year-old Pamittan not only graduated with Master in Public Administration (Policy Science) but was chosen from among 200 to 300 graduating students of Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan to deliver the valedictory address for Batch 2007.

In his speech, Pamittan likened graduation to the 'rites of passage' - a ritual that marks the passing from one stage of a person's life to another. He believes, as the German anthropologist van Gennep does, that passage rituals have three phases, that graduation marks the 'rites' to the third - the return to society under a new status, as "degreed" individuals with a diploma in hand - after experiencing some form of separation from society (phase 1) "to pursue academic advancement" and being transformed (phase 2) through a process of inculcation. He urged his fellow graduates to "be catalysts of development ...especially in our [own] country."

Aside from his master's degree from Ritsumeikan University, Jose Pamittan is also a graduate of Master in Business Administration and BS in Accountancy, both from St. Paul University Philippines in Tuguegarao City. Prior to his employment in DBM, he was an Instructor (1995-1997) and a Program Coordinator for Accountancy (1997-2001) of same University. He joined the DBM in November 2001 as Budget and Management Analyst.
